Banaybanay is a 2nd class coastal municipality in Davao Oriental, Mindanao, serving as the province’s western gateway. It spans about 409 km² and comprises 14 barangays, with a 2020 population of roughly 44,450.
Its name combines local words: banay (Kalagan for “sprout,” reflecting its rice-farming heritage) and bânay (Cebuano for “clans,” referring to early settlers).
Originally part of Lupon, it became a standalone municipality on June 21, 1969 (RA 5747).
Banaybanay features fertile plains that earned it the title Rice Granary of Davao Oriental, with rice, corn, coconut, and banana as staple crops. It sits along the Surigao–Davao Coastal Road, offering both coastal and upland terrain with mangroves facing the Davao Gulf and rising hills inland.
